Sarah Riordan (Ireland,
1983) was raised in Ireland.
She lives and works in Canada
and Ireland.
Riordan started drawing at an early age, tracing everything that she found
interesting. A mild nostalgic and dilettante outdoor enthusiast, she started
building large-scale drawings while spending one year in the USA as part of an
exchange student program. She returned to Canada to finish her education and
graduated with a BFA in Drawing and Painting in 2007.
Sarah actively exhibited her work in Canada, Ireland and internationally. She has won the Best Drawing Award at the Ireland Outdoor Art Exhibition and was featured in the Ontario Foundation’s survey of Canadian Painting titled Painting, Vol. 3 (2009). She is currently working on a suite of drawings that explore how large fluid geological bodies are structured and flow and the possibilities of collage with drawing.
Sarah Riordan develops drawings so to explore the surfaces of fossils, coral, wood, rocks and other bits of organic debris. She then enlarges them in search of patterns that recall those found in land formations, and in movement of the earth.
These drawings explore the limitations of memory and vision, seeking what happens when “scape” is penetrated conceptually, emotionally, physically and psychogeographically. Riordan’s artistic inspiration traverses subjects far and wide: grand landforms, waterbodies, glaciers, geology, painted landscapes, panorama, cyclorama, myriorama and cosmorama. Delving beyond topographical representation, she has taken the information found in drawing the surface to build drawings that consist of stratified layers of information with the aim of developing an understanding of the structure of her original source material.
For Riordan, the act of drawing becomes an immersive activity akin to wandering and meditation and the traces left behind are a record of that experience.
Before retracting from public life, Riordan held many solo and group exhibitions. She privately instructs visual art to adults and students. Wanting to hold on to the position of independent expert who has unlimited freedom of thought and creative work, she joined the Urban Book Circle and became art program editor.
