2015 EVENTS

“It is with great pleasure I greet you at the launch of the book ‘Royal Dynasty – The Karadjordjevic Family’s Long Journey Home’, written by my dear cousin, Christina Oxenberg. Over the past twenty-five years, our country, unfortunately, was left by hundreds of thousands of its citizens. Among them, tens of thousands of the most educated. When a nation progresses, when it is winning and everybody in the country has a good life, then it is easy and comfortable to belong to it. In difficult times, when divisions, wars and wrongdoings burden everybody’s life, it is courageous to testify about belonging to one people, and return to it from abroad. Today, Christina Oxenberg, the descendant of Karadjordje, returned to her people. Brought up in a foreign country, she rediscovered her people and showed it to the world. Two hundred years ago, our common ancestor bought weapons and equipped the Serbian army to lead it to revolt. But Karadjordje used to say that Serbia has enough men to defend it, but few learned people to lead the country’s progress. Our Christina did not bring a cannon to Serbia, she came to Serbia to write a book. Through one of the major themes of the modern world – identity and self-revelation – Christina has revealed and showed her family and her Serbia to the foreign audience and our audience. A world that is worth living, working and fighting. Christina, a prominent writer, came with a new spirit and ideas for a new time. I thank her for that.  I recommend this book to your attention and I wish her much success.” – His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander II Karadjordjevic.

Greeting everyone, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Alexander emphasized:

Besides Crown Prince Alexander the book launch guests were addressed by Professor Cedomir Antic, a historian and a member of the Crown Council, Aleksandar Jovanovic, a journalist, and Christina Oxenberg Karadjordjevic, the author of the book.

Christina Oxenberg Karadjordjevic is a descendant of the Serbian Royal Family: she is the great-great-great granddaughter of Karadjordje (the founder of modern Serbia), the daughter of Princess Elizabeth Karadjordjevic and an established American writer. In the book “Royal Dynasty – The Karadjordjevic Family’s Long Journey Home” she presented us with an exciting personal and family story that contains three segments: the short story of the family whose fate was firmly associated with one European nation and the history of Europe and the West in general over the past two centuries, Serbian history through the eyes of an American who grew up far from her country of origin which she (in adulthood) passionately studied and finally, the reader follows the story of self-discovery. Searching for roots, the author provides an overview of the history of the Serbian dynasty of Karadjordje until today. The book contains photographs from family albums that have never been published.

Christina Oxenberg Karadjordjevic presented herself for the first time to the Serbian public at this year’s Belgrade Book Fair. She was born in 1962 in New York, her mother is Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth Karadjordjevic of Yugoslavia and her father is an American Howard Oxenberg. She currently lives in Serbia. Christina is an established writer in the United States. Her first novel “Taxi” was significantly successful in 1986. Her sister Catherine Oxenberg starred in the role of Amanda, in the famous American TV series “Dynasty”.
